Design Philosophy – simple, straight-forward and “just-works”
Designed specifically to meet the needs of small and medium sized organizations, BackupAssist v4 is a straight-forward solution that cuts across the complexities handled by IT departments of large companies. Many backup packages are designed for large enterprises, contain complex processes, excess features and come with a big price tag. BackupAssist is simple to use, affordable and “just works”.
When we designed BackupAssist our philosophy was to offer an “out-of-the-box” backup strategy that “just-works” with your storage devices so you get a backup solution that is exceptionally simple for non-technical staff. Backup jobs had to be easy to schedule, manage and monitor. Accordingly, we've incorporated super-fast scheduling, intuitive user interfaces, daily email reminders and report notifications to make the whole process simple for the average user. BackupAssist continues to leverage and improve on proven backup standards.
If you're looking for a backup software package that allows you to easily schedule managed media rotation and monitor the status of backup jobs without creating a complicated mess, then BackupAssist is the ideal solution for you.
With simple setup and configuration interfaces, pop-up wizards and email notifications, BackupAssist is exceptionally simple to use for non-technical staff.

Easily choose your directories and files to backup
Choose the files you wish to backup from within the BackupAssist user interface. On Windows NT, you can select directories to include (this replaces the old command-line syntax of NTBackup) with ease, and on Windows 2000/XP/2003, you can choose files and directories to include and exclude, on both local and network drives, just like in the more expensive backup software.
-
Prepare media easily
BackupAssist allows you to prepare backup media on Windows 2000/XP/2003 in one click, replacing the tedious 10 step process. On Windows NT, clear instructions and screenshots are given on how to format and erase your media. It doesn't get much simpler than this!
-
Run scripts before and after backups (for advanced users)
BackupAssist will allow you to run custom scripts before and after backups. This enables you to take advantage of the BackupAssist scheduler to perform backup related tasks - such as exporting data from accounting packages to disk (in preparation for the backup).
-
Fine-tune backup settings
BackupAssist allows you to fine-tune your backup settings, such as backing up the system state, verifying the backup, using hardware compression, and ejecting the tape after backup.
-
Automatic network drive mapping for backing up remote machines
Before each backup, BackupAssist will map your network drives so that you can backup data from remote machines. This feature is automatically activated when you configure BackupAssist, and you can fine-tune your mapped drive settings from the Administration Console easily.
-
Quick view of job status and history
BackupAssist allows you to quickly view the status of previous backup jobs, telling you quickly which backups succeeded and which backups failed.

Online SQL Server backups
With the SQL Server Add-on, BackupAssist will will log into your SQL Server and perform backups of the SQL Server database. There's no need to stop the SQL Server in order to perform the backup, so the SQL Server can be operational 24/7.
Increased reliability over NTBackup
-
Email notification of Backup results
Whenever a backup is performed, a detailed log is mailed to you so you know the exact status of the backup. If for some reason a backup fails (eg. faulty tape), you will be notified so that you can take corrective action.
-
Reminder emails sent to your secretary or office administrator
Reminder emails are sent whenever a tape is to be changed in your tape drive. The email clearly states which tape is required in the drive, thereby minimizing the risk of human error (the wrong tape being put in on the wrong day).
-
Check backup results remotely
For small businesses: If a backup fails, you can also send an email to your offsite computer technician, so that they can remotely monitor backup results.
-
Open file backups
Windows Backup will skip over open files. BackupAssist will detect these skipped files, and manually back them up as an additional step.
-
No need to mess around with Removable Storage Management
BackupAssist removes the pain associated with RSM by interfacing with it directly. There's no need for batch files, or creating services
-
Overcomes numerous bugs in Windows Backup
BackupAssist overcomes several problems associated with Windows Backup in regards to scheduling and Removable Storage Management.
Verification, encryption and compression
-
Verification of backup data
Verify that the backup was written correctly to the backup media for greater reliability.
-
Encryption of backup data
Encrypt backups with a password key, providing a higher level of security for your backup data.
-
Compress backup jobs
BackupAssist features several compression algorithms, such as zip and 7z, allowing more data to be written to the backup media.
Cost-effective solution - save money
-
No frills, bells or whistles - just a smart choice
